Why can't i grow plants on this barren land?

There is a barren land outside my house and i am planning to grow plants there. However when i pant the plants the plants usually did not survive well and would die away after a short while. Can you guys give me some examples of problems with the land?Is it because of isects? If so i would buy pesticide.

Why can't i grow plants on this barren land?
Just about any land will support some kind of plants and life is very stubborn, so 'barren land' is a peculiar locution. Does literally nothing grow there already? Is it very hot? Is it very cold is it very dry?

You can supplement your land like the answerer above has done, which can be really hard work, or if the land is genuinely awful, call your local university extension, you can probably plant natives.
Reply:It may be because there are no minerals and nutrients in the land, have you tried mulching it after you plant it?
Reply:You haven't given us much information, but as you mention "barren land" it appears you have really poor soil. Many soils are poor for planting. Heavy clay is particularly bad and heavy sand is as well. If your problem is soil you can enrich the planting area by adding peat moss and potting soil containing perlite. These can be purchased in 25 pound bags at your local garden or home improvement store.

Break up the area to be used for your planting bed with a shovel and hoe. Dig down at least 12 inches and remove the poor soil. Using a shovel mix the poor soil in with the potting soil and peat moss including 1/3 of each in the mix before returning the soil to the planting bed. Once all the mixed soil is returned to the bed continue to turn it over with the shovel until it appears even in color and texture. Water with spray nozzle of hose measuring water in a jar or saucer in the bed. Water until 1 inch of water is in the measuring saucer.

Let planting bed set for one day. Plant your flowers the next day. Water every third day, more often if you are in a hot climate.

Hope this helps.
