What type of plants can survive without sunlight?

Are there any plants out there that can survive with little or no sunlight?

I'm doing this garden thing at school, and this garden is set right in the corner of the school I think. The wall of the school overshadows 1/3 of the garden. Could you suggest any plants that could survive in a place like this?

Hi:

This will depend what zone you are in. There are many shade shrubs and flowers that will grow in the shade.

Some shade shrubs are:

Aucuba, Azalea, Mahonia, Pieris Japonica, and the Hyrdangea.

Some shade flowers are:

Bleeding Heart, Purple Coneflower, Geranium,

Phlox, Wild Ginger, and Fern.

Make sure whatever you plant, add some mushroom compost with it. This is a organic fertilizer that will last up to a year. It doesn't smell real well but your plants will love it.

Take a look on my website as recently I just did a content page on shade plants. I will direct you to this page as well as my site map. There are many topic about landscape solutions as well as pictures and descriptions of a variety of plant specimens.

I hope this has helped some and if you need any further assistance, please feel free to contact me. Good luck with your school garden. I also have a landscape article and solution section that has information on school projects.

Reply:Ferns and some varieties of Hostas. I prefer the Southern Wood Fern.
Reply:Peace Lilies require very low light as well as most varieties of ferns and vines. They are all forest bottom plants and even in the wild have canopies of leaves to protect them from light.
Reply:A plant called Mother-in-law tongue can go forever with very little light and water. They are very hardy; I know cause I tried to murder one. It may still be alive somewhere.
