Are there any plants I can start indoors now for spring planting even though its only January?

We are in the Midwest and I'd love to start some plants indoors under the plant lights. Is it too early for lettuce and peas? What do you suggest?

Peas do not transplant well. Lettuce is a short season crop so really does not need the jump start. I would suggest that you choose some heirloom vegetable seeds- perhaps tomatoes, peppers or squash. Check online for unusual and/or heirloom seeds. Some good sites are www.heirloomseeds.com

, rareseeds.com, heirloomacreseeds.com or johnnyseeds.com
Reply:Since you will not plant outside for a few weeks yet. you want something that isn't going to start producing veggies before you get them in the ground. read teh packages to see how long till they produce and plant accordingly.

Lettuce doesn't take long at all so i think I would wait on this. Not sure about peas. haven't planted them for over 15 yrs. Don't remember.
