What type of plants would be good for my outdoor baloncy? I live in a condo so the plants can't be too large

I live in Seattle so there's not much sunlight in the winter but during summer the plants would have plenty of sunlight. So what types plants would work, plus what types of pots would I use???

Take a container that is 14" or larger, non-porous (so it doesn't crack during cold spells). Water when the soil is dry, you can also buy "water crystals" to add to the soil so you don't have to water as frequently. Use a slow release fertilizer like a bulb fertilizer.

Plant a level of bulbs for spring colour. Crocus, Hyacinth, tulip or Narcissus.

Put a spot or two of spring colour with Primrose if you don't want bulbs.

Use Pansy for frost tolerant all season blooming, they self seed too. Ornamental cabbage and kale look even better during light frost. Watch that it doesn't take over in the summer, pinch it back.

Dusty miller is a nice silver accent and looks good with Erica (next).

For winter colour use Erica Carnea, some types bloom during the winter (others in early spring or late fall) and the foliage is evergreen. Don't let this plant dry out or it becomes unhappy.

ferns are nice, too.

and both hang well, (especially jacob's ladder)
Reply:Hello. I am a Certified Master Gardener. In college, Horticulture was my major. I work with plants as a volunteer at my local University Botanic Gardens, and have been employed in a plant nursery.

A ficus tree can be kept pruned to about 3 - 4 feet high. The variegated ones are especially pretty.

Miniature roses are a good choice.

Fragrant pellargonium such as Citronella Pellargonium creates a refreshing fragrance.

Christmas and Easter cactus (succulents - no thorns) are nice.

A multi-stemmed Abutilon (Flowering Maple) can be kept pruned to 4 feet and is spectacular in flower.

Any and every fern, as long as you have indirect light.

If you have room for a small vine---Clematis grown in a pot on a trellis is a good choice.

I sincerely hope this helps.

Reply:How do you want to use your balcony area? Are you looking for a colourful relaxation area or just privacy from an adjacent high-rise? If you want a natural screen from the scorching sun or do you want an outdoor dining room? Or do you want to divide a large area into several rooms? If nothing else are you planning to grow some vegetables or do you just want to add some life to the otherwise dull balcony? Decide on what you want and then select the plants.

For example, if you want a colourful relaxation area then have flowering plants around you in your balcony. Shrubs, which can grow quite taller, will help you get some privacy. You can grow vines in the hanging pots and let them touch the ground. This way you can have a screen protecting you from the sunlight..... for more read

Reply:The larger the pot the less you have to water. But you need to find out if your balcony will take the weight.

We use containers that we buy from WalMart that is 14 inches across the top. We put 25 lb bag of Miracle-Gro Potting Soil with Plant Food into the containers. We then water well. Plant your flowers whenever you wish and water well.

If you get direct sunshine, annuals would be bright splashes of color for you. As the flowers fad, be sure to cut them off. This will cause more flowers to bloom. You will need to buy new annuals each spring/summer.

Vinca is a nice annual. It comes in all colors. It takes care of itself by dropping the flowers when they start to fad. It is called a self cleaning plant.

There are many many beautiful flowers to choose from. At the beginning of next summer, go to a garden center or nursery to see what does best in your area. Talk with the clerks, that is what they are there for.

You can also send for a free flower catalog and look through it to get acquainted with flowers. Here are two:
