What are the best plants for someone whos busy (I kill everything) other than a cactus?

I love having pretty plants and flowers for my front porch and back screened in porch but I'm a very busy mommy and I forget to water them. What plants are good to have that don't need a lot of attention that aren't cactus's?

Always had luck with geraniums. Think I heard though that its not good to have them around small children that might try eating or tasting the leaves. They are also real easy to root in a cup or vase, and then buy some plant soil %26amp; a pot, in a while you will have another plant to go on your front porch. Oops I forgot is your front porch open or does it have glass. They won't live outside in the winter. Happy planting and growing!!
Reply:I've found a good way to get appraised of local plants with growing toughness and ease is to look at the office and commercial properties by you. They are not going to plant things that need alot of tender care. Maybe just the flowers that they replant for color, but shrubs, trees etc will be area hardy and easy to grow or they won't go in. Take your camera or phone and shoot some picts you can show a nursery and they will help out. A good local nursery will give you advice for free-draw your yard from the sky-note which way each side is facing N/S/E/West-etc and they can help-good luck!

Reply:I think a bamboo plant would be really good based on the fact that you have no time to take care of plants. And there's many different types ranging from small to long bamboos and looks great anywhere!
Reply:Kids LOVE watering plants, so make it part of their job. (-: As soon as they are toddling, they'll love pouring.

If they aren't walking yet, though, an easy way to do it is to leave filled cans of water on the porch. (Make sure baby can't get into them -- a baby can drown in two inches of water! But watering cans are OK.) Then when they look a little down, it's easy to water them right away. Just remember to re-fill the cans!

Peace lilies, spider plants and philodendron are very good in not-so-sunny places (the back part of the porch). They can take a little neglect, but you should water them at least twice a week in the big growing season. I like petunias, begonias and geraniums in the sunnier places. Geraniums, in particular, can survive without a lot of watering.

Oh, and nasturtiums are great too, and you can eat the flowers in salad!
Reply:Silk plants are some of my favorites. Just replace them every year when they fade. Begonias are pretty tolerant - not tuberous begonias (those are impossible to keep alive), but annual begonias. If they wilt from lack of water they come will come back to life if you water them. Ask at your local garden store. They can tell you what will work best in your area.
