Is it possible to plant your squash and pumpkin plants too close together?

I was told that my pumpkin and squash plants would cross-pollinate and produce gourds. Is that true? If that's true does anyone have a good gourd recipe?

Is it possible to plant your squash and pumpkin plants too close together?
My organic veggie books say that's an old wives' tale, but that could be based on today's seed varieties preventing it. They are actually considered companion plants, plants that should be planted near each other.

It is true that you don't want to plant them too close together, but it's an issue of giving them room to grow and room for the fruits to mature.
Reply:It sounds plausible. You wouldn't want "posh" or -- god forbid, "squmpkins". :-) No, seriously, it does sound plausible. We made a mistake something like that once in our vegetable garden when I was a kid.
Reply:Pumpkins will not cross pollinate with true squash. Summer squash and pumpkin will cross but you won't see the result unless you save the seed and try to plant it the following year. Then you may end up with your squashkin.
