Why do some plants grow in some areas and not in others?

Ive got my garden its plain flat typical garden you can imagine. Why is it that at some parts there are grass dominating the area whilst else where there is a combination of grass and sedge plants. What are the main factors which determine why plants grow where they grow?

Why do some plants grow in some areas and not in others?
A large part of it could be nutrients in the soil, the amount of water a certain area gets, and competition. If some plants are by a large tree they might not grow because the tree is absorbing all the nutrients and water. Climate plays a big part too. Some plants won't grow in the desert because of the way they are made they will loose to much water and will dry out and die. These are just some easy answers to your questions.
