According to the Department of Energy, there were 2,776 powerplants over 50 megawatt-hour production as of the year end 2000. This tells you where and how many:

If you want to adjust this for current amounts, there were 3,638bn mwh produce in 2000 versus an estimate of 3,900 for 2006. So you can assume that there are about 7.2% more plants - so you can round that up to about 2,975.
