i followed an online site's instruction. it told me to separate the bulbs and give them no plant food, but enough water. i did all this. yet the plants are weak. and they are not growing. how can u i make them stronger once again?
How to take care of tulip plants?
Personally I hate tulips. They are notorious for getting smaller and weaker each successive season. You might try spreading bonemeal around them to see if that helps. Good luck to you. Sorry if I seem to be a downer about tulips but I have tried every trick in the book and still they dwindle to the point that they quit blooming entirely.
Reply:Compost your holes when planting tulips. You only have to do this once a year.
Reply:I am kinda confused are they in the ground or are you forcing them in pots. My tulips that are outside right now I have not given them any water they get what mother nature gives them they are up from the ground about 6 inches. But they will sit like this until they think the weather is warm enough for them to continue-they do there own thing but only when they are ready. They do kind of look weak in color but once they really start growing they are usually fine. I probably have about 100 tulips in my yard and they all look a little different . But for the most part they bounce back from the elements so I would say be patient. . . . and I live in Montana zone 4 and we had snow on the ground today.
Reply:Sometimes you have to treat tulips as annuals -- I think some professional tourist gardens do. I personally never have had a problem with mine. If your tulips are a few years old, you might have to dig them up and separate the bulbs, or just try again from scratch. When you plant bulbs, you can put oats or barley in there so the heat from fermentation encourages root growth. Don't fertilise new bulbs becuase it will burn the newly forming roots, so that site was right. Now that they're established you can fertilise them.
Make sure you get instructions for your zone becuause our zones are completely different, so what works here may not be the best thing to do where you are.
Reply:Tulips do not grow well if you are in the hot part of Calif. You will get flowers the first year, but only green leaves years after that.
It is best for us southern folks to grow daffodils instead of tulips. Daylilies are even better for our climate.

If your tulips are in pots, they are "forced" plants and it is best to throw them away after they bloom. It is too late to force tulips now. They are a winter plant for the house.
