What plants could be planted now and last through the winter?

I'm looking to start a garden now and I know it's kind of late. I'm not really into flowers and all, I was thinkin more like colorful leafy plants or bushes.BTW I know nothing of gardening.

What plants could be planted now and last through the winter?
Yes, it's very hot just now and you may want to wait a couple of weeks until the heat breaks. I just planted a Butterfly Bush a bit over a week ago and it's STRUGGLING to make it.

Almost any perennial can be planted in late Aug., early Sept., and will have plenty of time to establish its root system before it gets cold in MD.

Some of my favorites: Lavendar is nice because of its incredible fragrance, and bees love its nectar. Butterfly Bush draws butterflys, hummingbirds, and other nectar-lovers. Aster blooms in Sept. and puts out lots of flowers. Mums bloom around the same time, and are available in a zillion colors.

Be sure to visit the UMD cooperative extension service for good info on general gardening, integrative pest management (not spraying and trying to kill every bug/weed you see), and invasive species (ones to avoid planting).
Reply:right now while it is so hot and dry is not a good time to start any planting. when it cools off you can plant lots of different shrubs and later on in the fall you can begin to plant bulbs such as tulips and daffodils for spring blooms. just make sure to mulch them in well to keep em warm through the winter. also with new shrubs you want to cover them from too much cold while they are young. check with your local greenhouse they will carry the type plants you need
Reply:it depends on where you live
