What plants can I have at my sitout?

I am new for gardening or for plants. We live in Middle East and in Apartments of High rised building. This place is mostly hot (upto 45 / 50 deg C) and also humid. Winter is short and just comfortable on temperature. I want to have few attractive plants (Potted) in the sitout. Please suggest me few plants and ideas. Thanks in advance.

I worked in Riyadh and Kuwait for 17 years. I think your best approach is to visit the plant shops in your area to see what they have to offer. By the wording of your question, am I to assume that your "sit-out" is a covered patio, outside your living accomodations thus not airconditioned and perhaps the proposed location for your new plants would be subject to direct sun part of the day? If the answer is yes to both -- you will need to be very selective in your plant choices as the direct sunlight is a negitive aspect for most of the plants you could use due to the heat build-up within the pot and elevated heat gain imposed within a close area, i.e. walls.

Some things that lend themselves to container growing in that type of confines are palms, bouginvillia, the so called ice plant varietes (need sun), Algerian Ivy, but to name very many is a waste of time if your local suppliers don't have them. Ask the plant shop people - however keeping in mind where you are - they are apt to tell you yes to anything. I'd get an absolute commitment from the shop propriotor/manager/chief hancho that is a bound commitment to guarentee the plant(s) you purchase. If they don't live in the sit-out as they recommend, then they will return your money. That will test their recommendation. Beware the true ferns (Boston, Bird's Nest and the like) as your humidity level might not be high enough for the temp. all year. However, Asparagus ferns are good.
